Lifting and transferring an elderly bedridden patient or one with limited mobility is a common part of caring for them. Lifting can be physically challenging and requires care to ensure both caregivers and patients are safe. This article will give you valuable tips for safely and confidently lifting a patient who is stumbling, especially during bath time.
Always have someone with you to assist in lifting. Choose someone who is reliable and can provide assistance to you as well as the patient.

Use an electric transfer wheelchair: A chair like the BMW03 transfer chair can make the process of lifting much easier. It is also safer. Use the chair by following these simple steps:
- Place the electric chair beside the bed.
- Move the patient gently from the bed and into the position next to the chair.
- Open up the safety latch at the back of the transfer chair, and place it in front the patient. To prevent the transfer chair from sliding, engage the brakes.
- Adjust foot pedals on the chair to fit the patient's shoes securely. The chair comes with a nylon sling that is thickened for comfort. Position the sling beneath the patient's elbows and get ready to lift. Close the safety latch on the back of chair and lower patient slowly into seated position. Press the designated brake release button to release the brakes. The same procedure can also be used to transfer a patient from the toilet or bathroom to a chair.
To ensure your safety as well as the motor of the chair, close the charging port before showering. With its IP44 rating for waterproofness, the electric transfer chair can be used in the shower. Follow the instructions of the manufacturer with caution.
Read and understand the user's manual before using the chair. The chair must be left unattended during the 2 to 4 hour charging period. Contact your dealer or manufacturer's support line if you have any problems with the chair.
