As a caregiver for the elderly, it can be challenging to take care of seemingly minor tasks such as washing their hair. However, proper hair hygiene is essential to prevent odors, infections, and other health problems. In this article, we will discuss how to help bedridden elderly individuals wash their hair in a safe and comfortable manner.
Equipment Needed:
Face towel
Bath towel
Pins
Shampoo
Gauze or eye mask
Cotton ball
40℃~45℃ warm water
Plastic cloth (rubber sheet)
Bucket
Rubber horseshoe pad (can be made by yourself) )
Comb
Hair dryer
Adjust the Lying Position:
Place the bucket near the head of the bed to assist the elderly in moving their pillows so that their heads are close to the side of the bed.
Wrap the pillow with a plastic sheet, put a bath towel on the pillow, then place it under the shoulders of the elderly. Loosen the collar of the elderly and fold it inward, then wrap a dry towel around the elderly’s neck and secure it with pins.
Prevent water from getting on collars and sheets, and assist the elderly in lying on their backs to maintain a safe and comfortable posture.
Protect Eyes and Ears:
Put a rubber horseshoe-shaped cushion on the back of the neck of the elderly so that the neck rests on the protrusion. The head should be in the center of the shampoo sink, and the lower part of the sink should be connected to the sewage bucket.
Use cotton balls to plug the ears of the elderly, cover their eyes with a small towel or ask them to close their eyes to prevent water from flowing into their eyes and ears.
Shampoo:
Stand next to the elderly as closely as possible, then hold a little warm water with your hand, test the temperature on the elderly's head, and ask how they feel to determine whether the water temperature is appropriate.
Sufficiently moisten the hair of the elderly with warm water, then apply shampoo and rub the hair and scalp gently. Rub the hairline from the hairline to the top of the head, then rinse the elderly’s hair well with clean water, paying attention to their feelings during the process.
Dry or Blow Dry Hair:
After shampooing, remove the towel from the neck of the elderly and wrap their hair, then support the head of the elderly with one hand and remove the plastic cloth with the other.
Remove the cotton balls and small eye-protection towels in the ears of the elderly, then dry their faces with the towels and use skin cream as needed.
Help the elderly lie in the middle of the bed, rub their hair with a towel, then dry their hair with a large towel or use a hair dryer to dry their hair. Finally, use a comb to remove any fallen hair and place it in a paper bag.

Warm Heart Reminder from Senyang Medical:
During the shampooing process, pay attention to observing the elderly's reactions. If there is any abnormality, stop the shampoo immediately.
Keep the elderly warm during the shampooing process in winter.
Adjust the water temperature and dry the hair promptly to prevent the elderly from catching a cold.
Shampoo should not take too long to avoid causing fatigue for the elderly.
In conclusion, washing the hair of bedridden elderly individuals requires proper preparation and attention to detail to ensure their comfort and safety. With the right equipment and approach, caregivers can help their elderly loved ones maintain good hygiene and prevent health problems. If you're interested in purchasing a shamp
